Counseling and pastoral care ministries reach people at homes, hospitals, and nursing homes, especially in times of grief and crisis. These ministries come not only from the pastor, but from the many friends within the congregation as well. Youth programs include a full two years of confirmation instruction, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and Lutheran Youth Organization. Educational opportunities for adults are a continuing part of our work, further equipping our members for a variety of issues relating to faith and living. Lutheran Men in Mission, Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (WELCA) and Rebecca Quilters offer many fellowship and service opportunities for members of our congregation. The United Churches of Galena is an organization in which we participate fully to maintain ministries and activities including: the annual CROP walk for the hungry, the Good Friday and Thanksgiving Eve ecumenical worship services, Christmas programs, The United Churches Community Food Pantry and the Sonshine Center. Scholarship are given to members attending colleges of the church. We cooperate with numerous community groups including the The Riverview Center, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Red Cross, and Boy Scouts. Our church is one of the chartering organizations for Troop 95, and the troop meets regularly at St. Matthew. Our work does not stop with these activities, but our members go from here into the community to be involved because of their faith. Who can fully measure their impact through education, government, medicine, parenting, promoting values, and showing concern for their neighbors? Wherever charitable and constructive community work is being done, you are likely to find members of this church.
